Computer net works
Ikonet network department is equiped with the latest technology to setup efficient network platform for your organisation. The department has the capacity to implement the structural installations and provide secure server solutions to back the physical network.
Data Networks
Data networks are designed to provide the best data transimission path from one point of the corporate network to another.
a) Planning and design of computer networks
PTC has the capacity in terms of technical resources and expertise to setup and manage Local Area Networks (LAN) for SME's  and Wide Area  Networks (WAN) for regional organisations.  Whereas LANs enable users in a specific environment to work independently, they also provide access to sharing resources; which needs to occur in real-time with very low room for failure.
However, poorly executed networks are a night mare to operate since they are prone to breakdown.
PTC has multi vendor trained individuals who will plan and implement any corporate network as highlighted above..
Structural cabling
This deals with physical layer planning and design for all media. The media used is always based on the assessment of the cabling engineers who will identify the most appropriate media type to use. This decision can also be as per the clients specification..
Cabling solutions include; UTP Cat 5, Cat 5e, Cat 6, Coaxial cabling, Copper, fiber cable.
Installation activities include; Excavation, drilling, digging, trunking, installation of cable runs, terminating and testing.
Wireless technology
Wireless technology has arrived and it is here to stay. Many in the field believe that wireless is the future the need for faster and more reliable wireless has led us to research on the wireless technologies available today and draw clear lines as to what to use when and where.   There is increasing demand for hotspots as areas of accessibility to "on-demand" services and resources are not common.
We make it easy for airports, schools, shopping malls, restaurants, leisure parks, and individuals by setting up and managing hotspots for them.
Server planning and server setup
The conventional servers for any corporate network are;  domain server, mail server, file server, firewall  , proxy servers, cluster servers and web-server etc.
Servers create a platform to run network resources. Ikonet provides experienced System Administrators to design multi-platform servers that create  efficient and secure networks.
The platform is determined dependent on the clients instructions or as per our engineer's assessment of the clients' needs. Proper assessment is carried out and the proper solution provided to the client's satisfaction. Available configurations are in all Windows platforms (Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows 2003,  and all Suse Linux, Redheart Linux).
The Microsoft Windows server platform: The Microsoft Windows platforms are favoured by many implementers because most application developers provide for a Windows version as a rule of the thumb, therefore compatibility with new technology is assured. Secondly Microsoft Windows is the most supported OS with enough expertise at your local office to sort out any issues. The failures associated with the Microsoft Windows platform are confounded to its frailty in security, always targeted by viruses and hackers and then its very expensive to run "legally" i.e.  Software licensing problems.
Linux server platform: This platform if implemented well usually provides the required stability for any administrator who does  not want to be tasked with frequent troubleshooting. It is also recommended by most engineers for its secure lock - not easily targeted by virus attacks. Lastly the fact that most Linux releases.

are open source and therefore free gives this OS one major leap over  the Windows platform.
However corporate organizations adopting this platform have to be ready to cope with the fact that most independent applications are built to work with the Windows platform and may not readily be available for Linux (Of course it is advisable to contact your application vendor to ascertain). Secondly, most users in your environment  are not conversant with Linux administration leading to scarcity in support.
Because data is the heart of the enterprise, it's crucial for you to protect it. And to protect your organization's data, you need to implement a data backup and recovery plan. Backing up files can protect against accidental loss of user data, database corruption, hardware failures, and even natural disasters. It's your job as an administrator to make sure that backups are performed and that backup tapes are stored in a secure location.

Data Backup and Recovery

Creating a Backup and Recovery Plan

Data backup is an insurance plan. Important files are accidentally deleted all the time. Mission-critical data can become corrupt. Natural disasters can leave your office in ruin. With a solid backup and recovery plan, you can recover from any of these. Without one, you're left with nothing to fall back on.

Figuring Out a Backup Plan

It takes time to create and implement a backup and recovery plan. You'll need to figure out what data needs to be backed up, how often the data should be backed up, and more. To help you create a plan, consider the following:
  • How important is the data on your systems?
The importance of data can go a long way in helping you determine if you need to back it up as well as when and how it should be backed up. For critical data, such as a database, you'll want to have redundant backup sets that extend back for several backup periods. For less important data, such as daily user files, you won't need such an elaborate backup plan, but you'll need to back up the data regularly and ensure that the data can be recovered easily.
  • What type of information does the data contain?
Data that doesn't seem important to you may be very important to someone else. Thus, the type of information the data contains can help you determine if you need to back up the data as well as when and how the data should be backed up.
  • How often does the data change?
The frequency of change can affect your decision on how often the data should be backed up. For example, data that changes daily should be backed up daily.
  • How quickly do you need to recover the data?
Time is an important factor in creating a backup plan. For critical systems, you may need to get back online swiftly. To do this, you may need to alter your backup plan.
  • Do you have the equipment to perform backups?
You must have backup hardware to perform backups. To perform timely backups, you may need several backup devices and several sets of backup media. Backup hardware includes tape drives, optical drives, and removable disk drives. Generally, tape drives are less expensive but slower than other types of drives.
  • Who will be responsible for the backup and recovery plan?
Ideally, someone should be a primary contact for the organization's backup and recovery plan. This person may also be responsible for performing the actual backup and recovery of data. PTC would this for systematically.
  • What is the best time to schedule backups?
Scheduling backups when system use is as low as possible will speed the backup process. However, you can't always schedule backups for off-peak hours. So you'll need to carefully plan when key system data is backed up.
Do you need to store backups off-site?
Storing copies of backup tapes off-site is essential to recovering your systems in the case of a natural disaster. In your off-site storage location, you should also include copies of the software you may need to install to reestablish operational systems.
an attribute called Archive. This attribute often is used to determine whether a file or directory should be backed up. If the attribute is on, the file or directory may need to be backed up. The basic types of backups you can perform include
  • Normal/full backups
All files that have been selected are backed up, regardless of the setting of the archive attribute. When a file is backed up, the archive attribute is cleared. If the file is later modified, this attribute is set, which indicates that the file needs to be backed up.
  • Copy backups
All files that have been selected are backed up, regardless of the setting of the archive attribute. Unlike a normal backup, the archive attribute on files isn't modified. This allows you to perform other types of backups on the files at a later date.
  • Differential backups
Designed to create backup copies of files that have changed since the last normal backup. The presence of the archive attribute indicates that the file has been modified and only files with this attribute are backed up. However, the archive attribute on files isn't modified. This allows you to perform other types of backups on the files at a later date.
  • Incremental backups
Designed to create backups of files that have changed since the most recent normal or incremental backup. The presence of the archive attribute indicates that the file has been modified and only files with this attribute are backed up. When a file is backed up, the archive attribute is cleared. If the file is later modified, this attribute is set, which indicates that the file needs to be backed up.
Daily backups
Designed to back up files using the modification date on the file itself. If a file has been modified on the same day as the backup, the file will be backed up. This technique doesn't change the archive attributes of files.

Database Driven Website and portals

The portal (website) can be implemented in any of the current technologies. Ikonet can develop the portal (web site) either in the Linux, Java or Microsoft based technologies. Under the Microsoft based technologies, we can implement the solution in ASP, VB.NET, COM/DCOM, MTS, etc. Under Java based technologies, we could implement the solutions in the form of Enterprise Java Beans (EJBs), servlets, etc. In Linux the solution would consist of the application developed using PHP and MySQL. A-1 Technology also has very strong expertise developing portal using solutions such as Microsoft Sharepoint.

We develop and deploy Intranet web-sites and portals. A portal is a web site that acts as a single source for all information on a specific vertical domain. Basically, in most of the cases, the "vertical domain" aspect gives a web site the name of a "Portal".
We create database-driven websites and a wide range of web applications tailored to the specific needs of your organization. Our services are quick, efficient, and reasonably priced. We can customize your existing website to make it dynamic or we can create a database-driven website or web application from scratch. we implement the best practices in confidential transmission and storage of data. As a client you can rest assured that your information is kept confidential. Client–server model of computing is a distributed application structure that partitions tasks or workloads between service providers, called servers, and service requesters, called clients. Often clients and servers communicate over a computer network on separate hardware, but both client and server may reside in the same system. A server machine is a host that is running one or more server programs which share its resources with clients. A client does not share any of its resources, but requests a server's content or service function. Clients therefore initiate communication sessions with servers which await (listen for) incoming requests.
This model of computing is the most sought after because it provides a solid platform for implementating robust systems.
We work with different software development platforms to work around a wide range of solutions. We have impecable interface developers who use microsoft development environments to come up with professional solutions for clients.
Our developers have horned their skills in mysql, msql, dbase and Oracle experience. Our SDK contains some of the following scripting languages C++, Java, Sql, VB, PHP, .NET, Perl, python, Appengine.

Preventive Maintenance
The average PC user doesn't think much about problems that can arise with a computer until a problem actually occurs in the system. Once a failure happens, repairs can be both costly and time-consuming. The good news is that there are some preventive measures that you can take to decrease the likelihood of running into problems with the computer's smooth and efficient operation and also to lessen any damage that does occur despite best efforts to avoid failures.

Why Computers Fail

Computer failures occur for a variety of reasons, sometimes because of human error and sometimes because of factors in the environment that cause a computer to malfunction  or a combination of both. These factors can include excessive buildup of dust, heat or magnetism; viruses picked up from the Internet or from storage media shared between different computers; static electricity shocks or power surges; carelessness, such as spilling liquids into a computer or bumping or dropping the hard drive casing; software that has not been configured correctly or a PC's setup that has been handled incorrectly, such as incorrect handling of upgrades.
Here are some reasons why Ikonet should develop a preventive maintenance plan for your PC:
  •  Saves Money: I'm sure we've all heard the old adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". It's trite, but it is also true. Avoiding problems with your PC will save you money in the long run, compared with laying out cash for new components or repair jobs.
  • Saves Time: Saves time? How can taking two hours a month or whatever to perform maintenance save time? Simple: because it saves you the much bigger hassles of dealing with system failures and data loss. Most preventive maintenance procedures are quite simple compared to troubleshooting and repair procedures--now those can really eat up your time at a fantastic rate.
  • Helps Safeguard Your Data: For most people, the data on the hard disk is more important than the hardware that houses it. Taking steps to protect this data therefore makes sense, and that is what PM is all about.
  • Improves Performance: Some parts of your system will actually degrade in performance over time, and preventive maintenance will help to improve the speed of your system in these respects.
Ikonet has also a systematic approach in addressing the above mentioned causes of computer failure in the following ways;

Operating & Environment Conditions

We ensure that the environment of operation with your computer system is kept safe and clean for proper functionality of your system.
This includes preventing dust and any liquids from getting into your system, which may shorten the life span of your computer.
We also provide client side training for proper usability of computers.
Hardware & Hard Drive Maintenance

We ensure that your hardware is kept in its proper functionality through;
Hard drive defragmentation; Defragging your hard drive organizes your hard drive so that access to files and programs is more efficient.
Disk cleanup which will remove temporary files created by programs. This can free up additional hard drive space. Etc.
Software Maintenance

Ptc ensures that your Software is backed up and kept up to date with the advancing technology.

Antivirus Protection

We provide licensed antivirus solutions which does automatic and scheduled scanning for your hard drives, emails and data.
